How to view Minecraft client logs

A lot of people do not know that the Minecraft Client creates a log file every time you login and play. It is stored in your Minecraft folder. However, it’s not as easy to find unless you are familiar with installing plugins and mods. Below is a quick tutorial on how to access this folder so you can view your logs if you wish. This was done for a friend who has Windows 8.1. Instructions for Win7 and Win10 may differ slightly, but should be similar. Any questions or comments please let me know.

Follow these steps to display hidden files and folders in Windows 8 and 8.1:

  1. Press the Windows + S key combination to open the “Search” box.
  2. Type “folder” into the Search box, then select Folder Options from the list of search results. The “Folder Options” window should open.
  3. Select the View tab.
  4. Under “Advanced Settings”, select Show hidden files, folders, and drives.
  5. Click Apply, then click Ok.

Now all of your system’s hidden files and folders should be visible.

Now lets find the .minecraft folder.

  1. Press Windows + R (Windows button and “R” at the same time). This will bring up the “Run” Dialogue box
  2. Type in %appdata%. Click Ok
  3. It should bring you to \Yourusername\AppData\Roaming folder
  4. You should now see a folder named “.minecraft
  5. Click “.minecraft”. You should see a folder called “logs
  6. Click “logs”. You should see a bunch of files with *.log.gz extensions. For example, YYYY-MM-DD.log.gz

You can open the files with a compression program like winzip, winrar, or 7zip. If you don’t have any of those, I suggest you install one.

Open any of the .gz files with your compression program (winzip, winrar, or 7zip). Then you will see a file that has an extension of .log. For example, YYYY-MM-DD.log. You can view the .log file with Notepad/Wordpad or any other wordprocessor program.

Each logs are archived by date.

For the past year, my son has retired his Wooden Train Sets and now getting heavily involved in LEGOs. We have amassed thousands of pieces through several sets.  His creativity has taken off and instead of just building the sets from instructions he has started building his own creations.  Here’s one super car we built. Will be posting more soon.

Everquest now Free to Play

Sony Online Entertainment has recently announced the transition of it longtime MMROPG game, Everquest, to Free to Play format.

Personally this brings back many memories for me. I remember playing the beta and instantly being hooked to a totally different game immersion at the time. This game was a pioneer in which games like WoW was based on and now has now improved.  However, nothing compares to the Everquest feeling.  It really brought you into the world, where you can experience the environment and deal with a real live community.

It  brought a lot of fun for myself for a many years. However, it also brought a lot of frustrations a long the way.  I remember during launch day, how it was so frustrating trying to log in and after many attempts you finally got online, the massive lag that was created by the thousands of other players logged on created many crashes.  However, loyal “Evercracks” brushed away such set backs and continued to level their characters through many hours of grinding, camping, etc.

For the years I’ve played the game, I managed to level 4 characters to over 50. My main as you might have guessed was a noble Paladin named “Xagor”.  Sadly, I retired him from the original server I had played at and after a brief break from the game, restarted at a different sever in which I leveled two other characters to 50+.  A druid and A Warrior, and a while playing two accounts at the same time. Yes, sleepless nights. Playing early in the morning before work and playing at night after work and then no sleep during the weekends =). Those were the days…

Anyway, not sure if I ever want to even try this free for play version but the original game was trully an experience I will never forget.
